Alberto Murillo is a self-taught, Spanish-born abstract painter whose work explores the boundless possibilities of color, movement, surface, and form. A native of Madrid, Murillo has lived in cities and countries around the world, developing a creative practice across a variety of media before establishing his studio in New York City.

Murillo began his professional career in interior design before turning fully to painting. This foundation continues to inform the balance, structure, and spatial clarity of his compositions. Working primarily with acrylics and polymer emulsions, he pours and manipulates pigment across horizontal surfaces, pushing and pulling the material into concentrated fields of color before sealing the compositions beneath luminous layers of resin.

Often created on a large scale, Murillo’s paintings possess an inherent sense of freedom, vitality, and physical energy. Vivid, saturated hues meet quieter, earthy tones, creating a dynamic tension between calm and chaos, spontaneity and control. His intuitive understanding of color allows him to shape mood and meaning, transforming each composition into a conduit for emotion, memory, experience, and perception.

Rooted in Abstract Expressionism, Murillo’s work is also informed by architecture, landscape, contemporary culture, and memories of Spain and Latin America. While he cites influences ranging from Andy Warhol to Edward Hopper, his distinctive visual language emerges through the interplay of fluid gesture and deliberate construction. The resulting works feel simultaneously immediate and carefully resolved.

Murillo’s work has appeared in more than 40 exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe, and he is represented by respected fine art galleries across the country. His paintings are held in numerous private and corporate collections, including the Givenchy family collection, Coca-Cola, Colliers International, Holland & Knight, Wells Fargo, and Bristol Myers Squibb.
