E. Vincent Martinez

E. Vincent Martinez is a Cuban-born mixed-media artist, photographer, filmmaker, educator, and gallery co-owner based in Tryon, North Carolina. His multidisciplinary practice moves fluidly between photography, ceramics, textiles, book arts, mixed media, and documentary film, reflecting a lifelong commitment to storytelling, material exploration, craft, and visual culture.

Martinez earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Barry University in Miami, where he focused on ceramics and photography. After completing his undergraduate studies, he was awarded a two-year Core Fellowship at Penland School of Craft in North Carolina, an influential experience that expanded his artistic practice across weaving, textiles, book-making, and photography. During his time at Penland, Martinez developed a particular interest in in-camera multiple exposures, a process that continues to reflect his fascination with layering, memory, material, and image-making.

He later continued his photographic studies at Rochester Institute of Technology, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts. In 2001, Martinez completed a Master of Art Education degree at Georgia State University and received teaching certification in art for grades K through 12. His background as both artist and educator informs his ability to connect ideas, images, and audiences through accessible yet deeply thoughtful creative work.

Across his studio practice, E. Vincent Martinez brings together fine art, craft, photography, and narrative. His work is shaped by an interest in process, identity, place, and the handmade. Whether working through mixed media, photography, or film, Martinez approaches each project with a strong sense of visual composition and emotional resonance. His art often reflects the layered nature of experience itself, where memory, culture, image, and material overlap.

As a filmmaker, Martinez has developed a significant body of documentary work centered on artists, makers, and creative communities. In 2023, he completed his second full-length documentary, Bringle: A Tale of Two Makers, which was selected for the Tryon International Film Festival. The film reflects Martinez’s ongoing interest in craft, legacy, and the lives of artists whose work is rooted in material knowledge and personal vision.

His current documentary, Iron Pearls, focuses on blacksmith artist Elizabeth Brim and premiered to sold-out audiences at the Tryon International Film Festival in 2025. Through this film, Martinez continues to explore the power of craft-based storytelling and the cultural importance of documenting artists whose work expands traditional definitions of making.

Martinez is also the co-owner of Mirrorball Gallery in downtown Tryon, North Carolina, where he helps shape the gallery’s curatorial vision and commitment to contemporary art, craft, photography, and community-centered cultural programming. Through Mirrorball Gallery, he supports emerging, mid-career, and established artists while helping create a vibrant space for exhibitions, artist talks, film, performance, and creative exchange in Western North Carolina.

In addition to his studio, film, and gallery work, E. Vincent Martinez is serving a second term on the Board of Trustees at Penland School of Craft. His continued involvement with Penland reflects his longstanding dedication to craft education, artist development, and the creative communities that have shaped his own artistic life.

E. Vincent Martinez’s work appeals to audiences interested in contemporary mixed-media art, fine art photography, documentary film, Cuban-born artists, Penland School of Craft artists, craft-based storytelling, and the evolving relationship between art, material, and narrative. As an artist, filmmaker, educator, and cultural leader, Martinez continues to build a creative practice rooted in curiosity, generosity, and the belief that art has the power to connect people through story, process, and place.
