Julie Torres
Julie Miller Torres is a contemporary fine artist and printmaker recognized for her innovative approach to woven screenprint works. Working primarily in printmaking, Torres creates visually layered, materially complex pieces that merge technical precision with a deeply considered exploration of identity, freedom, equality, and empowerment. Her practice expands the possibilities of contemporary printmaking by transforming traditional screenprints into dimensional, tactile works that feel both structured and fluid.
Born in Boise, Idaho, and raised in Tallahassee, Florida, Torres brings a distinctive perspective shaped by both her creative training and her background in law. She earned a Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor from the University of Florida, a Master of Laws from the University of Miami, and later returned to the visual arts to receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the Savannah College of Art and Design, known as SCAD. This multidisciplinary foundation informs her work, giving it a powerful conceptual framework rooted in justice, resilience, and human agency.
Torres is best known for her woven screenprint pieces, which combine printmaking, pattern, repetition, and handwork to create dynamic compositions with striking visual movement. Through cutting, weaving, layering, and reassembling printed surfaces, she challenges the boundaries between print, textile, painting, and sculpture. Her process becomes both a formal investigation and a metaphorical act, reflecting themes of reconstruction, connection, transformation, and strength.
At the heart of Julie Miller Torres’ artwork is a celebration of empowerment and possibility. Her work often considers how systems, histories, and lived experiences intersect, while offering a visual language that is bold, refined, and deeply resonant. Through color, texture, rhythm, and structure, Torres creates contemporary artworks that invite viewers to consider both individual freedom and collective progress.
Julie Miller Torres’ work is held in significant public, private, corporate, and institutional collections, including the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as Delta Air Lines, SCAD, The Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, Norwegian Cruise Line, and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation. Her growing presence within major collections reflects the strength of her artistic voice and her contribution to contemporary printmaking.
As a contemporary printmaker, Julie Miller Torres continues to develop a practice that is both materially inventive and conceptually meaningful. Her woven screenprint works position her as an important voice in contemporary art, particularly within conversations around fine art printmaking, women artists, empowerment, equality, and the evolution of mixed media works on paper.
