Taylor Bareford

Taylor Bareford is an artist and educator in Atlanta, Georgia. His primary focus in photography is the use of historical and alternative processes to create conceptually based photographic works on a variety of subjects he finds compelling. This series of images is from “Life and Death,” which is his way to communicate that there is a fine line between the two and that each work together in a cycle. Dark and moody imagery is generally associated with death, yet the images contain subjects tied directly to life and birth.

Ambrotypes are wet plate collodion images, like tintypes, but exposed on a transparent medium. The images are negative in nature until placed against a dark background, which turns the images into a positive. This process and tintypes were mainly used in the 1860s as a cheaper alternative than Daguerreotypes.
